Animal Control urges extra care at Belleview Park following coyote incident
Posted Date: 5/6/2009

Englewood Animal Control is advising residents who use Belleview Park to use extra care when visiting the park due to reports of an aggressive coyote living in the park. On May 5, 2009, a coyote killed a dog that was walking off-leash with its owner. The coyote then aggressively approached an adult walking in the park. Englewood Police and Animal Control are working in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Wildlife to remove this specific coyote from the park due to its unusually aggressive behavior.

If you encounter a coyote exhibiting obviously aggressive behavior (such as growling, approaching, or attacking/biting a person), please call 911 immediately to report the incident. There is no need to report sightings of coyotes who are exhibiting normal behavior. Residents and visitors are reminded to be aware of their surroundings while in the park. If you see a coyote, you should try to "haze" the animal by yelling loudly, waving your arms, and throwing things at it.

Dog owners are reminded that Belleview Park is not an off-leash park. Dogs are permitted off-leash only in the Canine Corral area on the west side of Belleview Park.

The City of Englewood has worked with the Division of Wildlife to post signs in Belleview Park advising park visitors of this issue.
